GRS bulletin 120 (1911): Automatic Signaling for Electric Railways

Over de ontwikkeling van het Absolute-Permissive-Block System vonden we dit fraaie document, geschreven door W.K. Howe, Chief Engineer GRS, 1911.

Uit het voorwoord:
"In presenting this paper to your notice, we desire to call your particular attention to the Absolute Permissive Block system, described on pages 28, 29 and 39.
This provides the absolute protection essential to safety in opposing traffic movements and the permissive following movement required with dense traffic, especially that in which the density is of one direction during one period of the day and in the opposite direction during another.
We are prepared to furnish signals of the type illustrated on Page 39, and will be glad to furnish full description and prices on application.

Met vanaf bladzijde 35 nog enkele correcties en aanvullingen op het daarvóór gestelde.
Waardevol is het dat we in dit historisch document de kernwaarden van het Absolute-Permissive-Block System, gecombineerd met de spoorstroomloop (nog zo'n historische uitvinding), terug kunnen lezen. De auteur beweert dat de ontwikkelde methode aansluit bij de behoeften van interstedelijke gebieden.
Het begrip fail safe werd op dat moment nog niet gehanteerd, maar de auteur windt geen doekjes om de eigenschappen, getuige zijn slotzin: "... the net result being that for a given outlay greater safety and greater capacity can be afforded with the Absolute-Permissive-Block system than with any other form of automatic block signalling known to the writer".
De B-relais moesten in 1911 nog uitgevonden worden. Pas toen díe breed werden toegepast, ontstond de ons bekende variant in B-relais-techniek: het 4-draad APB-systeem. Veel later kwamen we er pas achter dat het storingsgedrag (te) veel nadelen had. Maar dat doet niets af aan de essentiële kenmerken van het toegepaste principe van absolute en permissieve seinen, zoals we die in Nederland kennen.
